Limits
How many rules, payment methods and tags your settings can have, and why.
Why there are limits
Your rules run at Shopify in every checkout, as a Shopify Function. Shopify gives a function a fixed compute budget. If it isn't enough, Shopify stops the calculation, and checkout shows all payment methods, including those a rule should block. The limits keep any settings well below that budget.
The limits
| What | At most |
|---|---|
| Rules | 10 |
| Conditions per rule | 5 |
| Payment methods per rule | 10 |
| Entries in the base order | 10 |
| Different payment method names across base order and rules | 20 |
| Characters per payment method name | 3 to 60 |
| Different customer tags across all rules | 20 |
| Different product tags across all rules | 2, each up to 40 characters |
If a limit is exceeded, the app saves nothing. The top of the page then says what's too much, and so does the rule it concerns.
What the limits don't cover
A name that matches a lot of payment methods, such as a single short word, costs more compute time than ordinary names. The test run warns you in that case. Longer names match more precisely and are safe.
What Shopify allows on your plan
Shopify sets some limits by plan and country (Shopify Help Center):
- In the United States and Canada, a store that isn't on Shopify Plus can't customize credit card fields. Rules apply to all other payment methods there; credit cards stay as Shopify shows them.
- Hiding a payment method in only one place of checkout is for Shopify Plus. The app always hides the whole payment method.
- Payment customizations don't run in Shop Pay and Point of Sale.
